App, web or App Clips?

The way we order & pay has changed dramatically in the last year or so. As a result, deciding whether to use an ordering app, web-based ordering, or even new App Clip technology (which we think of as somewhere between the two) can be a challenge.

At OrderPay we believe in giving you and your customers a choice. 

So to help you decide which route fits your needs, here’s our guide to your options:

Ordering & payment via an app

What’s it all about then?

Customers download an app to order & pay. The app covers multiple venues so users can use it in different locations. 

What are the benefits?

  • Data. Knowing about your customers and what they order is priceless. App-based ordering can help collect far more data than via a webpage.
  • Additional features. Web-based solutions can work well, but once you start adding in endless exciting new features like gifting, bill splitting & user profiles, only an app can handle all of that. 

Any downsides?

  • App fatigue. We get it, not everyone wants to download another app, but we think it’s great to give them the choice.
  • Branding. Quite rightly, venues want to keep their brand front & centre. However, OrderPay ‘reskins’ to your own branding as soon as a customer is in your venue.

Ordering & payment via a web browser

What’s it all about then?

Customers order & pay via a web browser – accessed either via the venue’s website or scanning a QR code.  

What are the benefits? 

  • It’s quick. No need to download an app, customers just head straight to a webpage.   
  • It’s easy to integrate with your existing website, keeping your customers on your own digital turf.

 Any downsides? 

  • A user may need to re-enter their info and card details with each order if their browser doesn’t save this. 
  • As we mentioned above, a web-based approach risks missing out on data collection & new features that are optimised for apps, but if you’re simply after a quick way to take orders, this may be the route for you.

Ordering & Payment via App Clips

What’s it all about then?

Not to toot our own horn too much, but this is brand-spanking new technology & we’re really excited about it. Venues attach a smart ‘coaster’ to tables, users tap or scan, & voilà – the menu loads instantly. What loads is in fact a ‘slimmed down’ version of our app, but without the need for download.

What are the benefits?

  • Speed. Users can load a menu in seconds without downloading an app.
  • Instant payments. App Clips use Apple Pay to take payment without the need to add a card.
  • Customers can get a push notification when their order is ready, which isn’t possible on mobile websites.

 Any downsides?

  • This technology is currently only available for Apple devices, so Android users will be taken to the app or a web-based menu.
